The story of Abraham on Mount Moriah is one of the most gripping scenes in Scripture. God calls Abraham to take his beloved son Isaac—the son of promise—and offer him as a burnt offering. Abraham doesn’t understand, but he rises early, gathers what he needs, and walks up the mountain in obedience.
This moment isn’t ultimately about sacrifice—it’s about surrender. Abraham stands at an altar where trust is tested and faith is proven genuine.
Altars appear throughout Scripture: Noah builds one after the flood, Jacob pours oil on one at Bethel, and the priests in Israel offer sacrifices upon them daily. Altars were sacred places—places where heaven met earth, where worship was expressed, and where surrender was lived out.
But on Mount Moriah, something extraordinary happens. As Abraham prepares to lay down what is most precious, God stops him—and provides a ram in the thicket. Abraham names the place The Lord Will Provide. And generations later, on that same mountain ridge, God would provide again—this time not a ram, but His Son.
Jesus is the ultimate picture of surrender. At Gethsemane, He prays, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” At Calvary, He becomes the offering—not by force, but by choice.
The altar becomes the cross, and the surrender becomes our salvation.
Today, the thread of the altar invites you to ask:
What am I holding too tightly? Where is God asking me to trust Him more deeply?
Surrender isn’t giving up—it’s giving over. It’s laying down our fears, our timelines, our desires, and trusting that the God who provided for Abraham will provide for us too.
The altar is not a place of loss;
it is the place where God reveals His faithfulness.
Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for being the God who provides.
Teach me the beauty of surrender—not from fear, but from trust.
Help me lay down anything that competes for my heart,
and give me the faith to believe that You will meet me where I kneel.
Like Abraham, make me quick to obey and slow to doubt.
Thank You for Jesus, the perfect sacrifice given for me.
I place my life, my desires, and my future in Your hands.
Amen.
